Genesis review

If you're looking to try a 100% plant-based restaurant that serves comfort and fast food then Genesis is the place for you.

Based in Shoreditch, Genesis only use organic and healthy ingredients and have a wide range of cuisines. From Malaysian to Mexican, they have gluten-free options and use avocado oil to cook with.

To try out their menu, I went with Jam and we ordered a starter, two mains, a side and dessert. For the starter, I chose the fried avocado taco, which comes with panko avocado, refried beans, pico de gallo, sour cream served on top of a soft corn tortilla. The panco avocado was delicious - crispy and golden with a piece of ripe avocado in the middle. The sauces and garnishing really created and captured those true Mexican flavours that you'd expected in a taco. The only thing that I would have liked is more of everything! For £4, the portion size was quite small and there was only one piece of panko avocado but a lot of sauce.

For my main I chose the Mayan Dog. Served with guacamole, sour cream, spicy tomato salsa, tomatillo sauce, nachos, pico de gallo and a seitan hot dog in a soft brioche roll. The broken pieces of nachos found scattered amongst the toppings gave a great crunchy and contrasting texture. All the toppings complemented each other, especially the guacamole but do be warned it can get messy! The hot dog was definitely worth the £9 but it is best enjoyed with a side.

The kimchi fries with Sriracha mayo came at a whopping £6 but these can be shared by two people (if you're not greedy). I enjoyed the flavour of the mayo and found it incredibly tasty but the skin on fries for me were a bit dry and overcooked.

For dessert we both selected the soft serve ice cream, which is also gluten free. It is only available in vanilla but you can add toppings for an extra 50p each. I went for the full chocolate combo - chocolate buttons and chocolate sauce. Jam went for the raspberry sauce and chocolate buttons, which was delicious. The raspberry sauce added just the right amount of tartness, which refreshed the palette with each bite.

I would recommend Genesis if you're looking to treat yourself and are craving a healthier option of comfort food. It's a great place with pretty plates and friendly staff. It can get busy in the evenings so try and book ahead.
