Vegan Afternoon Tea - La Suite West

To celebrate my birthday, I wanted to go for my first vegan afternoon tea. With a tempting menu and an even more tempting price at La Suite West, I was looking forward to sinking my teeth into some sweet treats.

Being a Friday lunchtime, it was nice and quiet so we could choose where we wanted to sit. The outdoor seating area is great for photos but be warned, wasps may appear.

First to arrive were the 5 different types of finger sandwiches:

  • Scrambled tofu with mustard cress
  • Portobello mushroom pate with cashew nut butter
  • Lemon & thyme tahini with cucumber
  • Roast tomatoes with sunflower seed pesto
  • Avocado chilli mousse with rocket

I was very surprised that my favourite was the lemon and thyme tahini. Although it was very simple, it just had so much flavour where the others lacked it. I found the bread to be quite dry - probably due to being prepared overnight or left out for too long. I wish we could have requested for more sandwiches to balance out the sugar overload which was next..

Warm scones served with whipped coconut cream and fresh strawberries. I had only heard good things about it so was curious to try it. I can honestly say whether you're vegan or not, this is the best part on the menu. Golden exterior with a soft inside covered with a dollop of whipped coconut cream and topped with thinly sliced strawberries was divine.

By this point you will wish you had an extra stomach to fit in the last course (I know I did). The final plate of desserts were beautiful to look at, decorated with fresh, edible flowers and oozing with chocolate. I could only manage a few bites as the sugar intake became too much. The pretty cake with the flowers was not for me due to the overpowering marmalade. If you like banoffee, make sure you have room for the chocolate dessert in the middle. The cheesecake was like granola and is very similar to naked bars.

Overall, I would say the menu and unlimited tea matches the price so you can eat guilt free without breaking the budget. I was quite disappointed that no extra effort (candle or birthday greeting) was made even though I mentioned it was my birthday when I booked it. But to be fair, I wouldn't have been able to handle any more desserts!

I would definitely recommend the scones, lemon and thyme tahini sandwiches and Genmaicha tea.
